Kentridge’s run at its first state volleyball championship since 1989 came up short.
The Chargers rolled into the 4A semifinals but fell to Richland before outlasting Monroe to finish third in the tournament at the Yakima Valley SunDome on Saturday.
Top-ranked Kentridge (25-1) beat Monroe in five games, 25-23, 25-23, 18-25, 21-25, 15-9, taking home the program’s first state trophy since finishing second in 1990.
Richland swept Kentridge in the semifinals, 25-18, 25-20, 25-17. West Valley of Yakima went on to defeat Richland in four games for the title.
For coach Eric Han, it was a great season directing an exceptional group of girls.
“The girls had the time of their lives at state,” Han said. “It was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and we were honored to have represented our community of Kent in the state tournament. The seniors had a great sendoff to finish strong with a third-place finish.”
Undefeated and top-ranked entering the tournament, Kentridge stormed into the semifinals with a pair of wins Friday.
The Chargers defeated Kennedy Catholic in their opening match in four games, 25-27, 25-21, 25-13, 25-22, before sweeping Camas in the quarterfinals, 25-21, 25-23, 25-20, behind senior outside hitter Zaiah Calvin’s 16 kills and 12 digs.
The Chargers, North Puget Sound League Cascade Division and West Central District tournament champions, were playing at state for the first time since 2001.
