Kentlake remains hot, rips Thomas Jefferson 30-8

Just three games into the football season, the Kentlake High football team is doing something it fell short of in previous years.

That is, whether it be pretty or not so much, the Falcons are finding ways to win. Kentlake did just that on Saturday, rolling past Jefferson, 30-6, in a South Puget Sound League North Division game.

Tayler Angevine rushed for 108 yards and a touchdown and added another score on a third-quarter punt return, helping the Falcons (3-0) remain perfect.

It’s the first time in the school’s history that Kentlake has started the season 3-0. But it wasn’t pretty, coach Mike Shepard noted.

“We expected to play a whole heck of a lot better. We left probably 21 points on the field,” Shepard said.

With the win, the Falcons remained in a three-way tie for first place with Auburn (3-0) and Tahoma (3-0).

Dallin Grover gave Kentlake an immediate boost, blocking a Jefferson punt just moments into the game. Kentlake quarterback Lewi Larson turned the block into points moment later, rumbling in for a 2-yard score and an instant 7-0 lead. Angevine added a 64-yard touchdown run later in the first quarter, giving the Falcons what proved to be an insurmountable 14-0 lead.

Despite the win, Kentlake is keeping things in perspective with league powers Federal Way (2-1) and Auburn (3-0) lurking on the horizon.

“I think there’s an excitement level here,” Shepard said. “They’re more cautiously optimistic than anything else. None of these kids have been in this position before.”

• Federal Way 38, Kentridge 18: The Chargers (1-2) rolled up 303 yards of total offense, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Federal Way (2-1) in a South Puget Sound League North Division loss.

Kentridge’s Devin Topps provided the defensive play of the night, turning a fumble recovery into a 30-yard touchdown. But it was too little, too late for Chargers, who will travel to Bethel on Thursday for a nonleague game.
