KATIE LY, Kentridge

Grade: Sophomore. Sport: Tennis. Accomplishment: Ly defeated Kentwood’s Rachel Venn 6-2, 6-0 in a No. 1 singles match between two of the area’s top teams. Ly’s victory helped the Chargers upend the Conquerors, 3-2. Favorite class: Commercial Art. Greatest athletic moment: Ruining Kentwod’s undefeated record. Most recent book read/author: “Animal Dreams” by Barbara Kingsolver.  Favorite movie: Tangled.  Also noted: Along with being a standout tennis player, Ly also is part of Key Club, National Honor Society, sports a 3.95 grade-point average and is planning to attend the University of Washington after she graduates.

 

BECCA PETERSON, Kentlake

Grade: Senior. Sport: Track & Field. Accomplishment: Peterson, a pole vaulter, uncorked a mark of 9-feet-6 inches to win the meet crown at the Bellevue Invitational. Favorite class: Photography. If you could invite anyone in the world to dinner, whom would you invite, and what would you serve: I would invite my mom’s dad that I never got to meet and get to know. (I would serve) Chinese food. Greatest athletic moment: Almost clearing 10 feet in the pole vault at the Bellevue Invitational. Currently playing on your iPod: Anything alternative, like All Time Low and Escape the Fate.  Favorite movie: The Hangover.  In 10 years, I will be …: A nurse or a special education teacher. Also noted: In the fall, Peterson will be attending Washington State University, where she hopes to double major in nursing or special education and photography.

 

REESE McGUIRE, Kentwood

Grade: Sophomore. Sport: Baseball. Accomplishment: McGuire went 5-for-5 with a pair of home runs and 10 runs batted in, leading the Conquerors past Kent-Meridian last week, 23-2. Favorite class: English. If you could invite anyone in the world to dinner, whom would you invite, and what would you serve: I would invite (Washington Nationals prospect) Bryce Harper. He is a catcher, like me, and has really inspired me being a high school player going straight to professional baseball. I would make spaghetti because it’s my favorite. Greatest athletic moment: Getting a game-winning hit for the Kansas City Royals scout team. Most recent book read/author: “Hatchet” by Gary Pauls. Currently playing on your iPod: My future wife, Katy Perry.  Favorite movie: Hurt Locker and For Love of the Game.  In 10 years, I will be …: Playing professional baseball. Also noted: McGuire was the MVP class of 2013 in Baseball Northwest last year.

 

CHRIS KUBEJA, Kentwood

Grade: Junior. Sport: Soccer. Accomplishment: Kubeja recorded a pair of shutouts last week, the first in a 1-0 win over Mount Rainier, and the second in a 2-0 victory over Auburn Riverside. The two victories helped the Conquerors take a commanding lead in the race for the SPSL North title. Favorite class: Wood shop. If you could invite anyone in the world to dinner, whom would you invite, and what would you serve: Mike Rowe (from the television show Dirty Jobs) and I would serve steak and crab. Greatest athletic moment: Playing for HP FC. (During the last game of a tournament), I dribbled the ball from the 50-yard line and shot from the 18, and scored. I play defense Most recent book read/author: “A Lesson before Dying” by Ernest J. Gaines.  Favorite movie: The Patriot.  In 10 years, I will be …: An architect or building log cabins.

 

JOSH SMITH, Kent-Meridian

Grade: Sophomore. Sport: Track & Field. Accomplishment: Smith established a pair of season personal bests in an SPSL North dual against Tahoma, going 12-feet in the pole vault and added an 11.81 mark in the 20-meter dash. Favorite class: Biology. If you could invite anyone in the world to dinner, whom would you invite, and what would you serve: My grandpa, and I would serve steak, lobster and veggies. Greatest athletic moment: Track in seventh grade. Most recent book read/author: “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck. Currently playing on your iPod: “Look at me now” by Chris Brown.  Favorite movie: From Paris with Love.  In 10 years, I will be …: Starting a career as an engineer. Also noted …: Smith also is an accomplished wrestler as he advanced to the state tournament during the winter.
