If you’re around Kentlake High School in any sporting capacity, Shawna Behrens is a name that you will have heard. She is the Kent Reporter Coach of the Month in a partnership with the Kent School District.
Behrens is in year 16 this season and coaches three sports at Kentlake. She’s the head volleyball coach as well as an assistant coach for girls flag football and fastpitch.
“Behrens is passionate about the success of her student-athletes on and off the court! She creates opportunities for her program to learn the finer points of being part of a team while helping them grow individually. Shawna promotes this by encouraging players to challenge themselves in their athletic, academic, and personal lives. She strives for members of Kentlake volleyball to excel as players, students, and global citizens. Shawna’s dedication is admired, appreciated, and respected,” said Athletic Director Greg Kaas.
Behrens looks at her time as a coach as a way to impact young folks’ lives and she does just that because that’s what her coaches did for her.
“The primary reason that I coach is because of the impact that coaches and teachers had in my life. I coach to have a positive impact on young athletes; to help them develop into great people, learn resiliency, and an opportunity to reach their full potential. Lastly, I coach to establish in athletes the importance of teamwork, commitment and the love of competition,” Behrens said.
Not only does Behrens coach multiple sports, she also wants her players to play other sports as well.
“I hope my students will know that I love them and want the very best for them. My hope is that they know I pushed and motivated them because I wanted to see them excel in their sport and compete at a high level. The last point for me is one the most important, that students built positive memories as teammates that lasts a lifetime,” she said.
