The USA/ASA Softball has awarded the city of Kent its highest honor for excellence in national tournament hosting.
The city received the James Farrell Award of Excellence for coordination of the 2016 ASA 12-and-under girls’ Western National Fastpitch Tournament at Service Club Ballfields on July 26-30.
The 22-team event attracted eight teams from Washington, eight from California, three from Oregon, two from Hawaii and one from Idaho.
To attain the award for hosting a ASA/USA national championship tournament, coordinating organizations must receive an overall rating of at least 95 on a 100-point scale from the ASA tournament representative, the tournament umpire-in-chief and the ASA national office staff.
The award is named in honor of the former St. Louis ASA commissioner and national office staff member.
This is Kent’s fourth James Farrell Award since 2008.
Kent’s reputation and premier athletic complexes has translated into continued success in obtaining
USA/ASA national tournaments, which are awarded through a competitive bidding process two years in advance. Kent will host the 16A National Fastpitch Tournament in July 2018. It is expected to bring 130-plus teams from all parts of the United States and generate an estimated $2.5 million to the local economy.
