Harris and Vertrees capture track titles in K-M Invitational

Sean Harris and Melanie Vertrees of Kent-Meridian were individual winners in their respective meets on Saturday in the second Kent-Meridian Invitational track meet at French Field.

Harris, one of the state’s leading hurdlers, won the 110-meter highs in 15.25 seconds, as the Royals racked up 72 points to finish second behind Heritage of Vancouver, Wash. (117.5 points).

Vertrees led the way in the high jump, clearing 5 feet, 4 inches. She also took third in the 100 hurdles.

The Royals finished eighth in the girls meet with 51 points. Enumclaw won that title with 113.5, and Kentridge was fifth with 55.

Several other Kent athletes had multiple finishes among the top eight.

Andre Moore of Kent-meridian was second in the triple jump and third in the 110 hurdles. Teammate Brandon Harris was third in the long jump and seventh in the triple jump, and Marlow Brim of the Royals took seventh in the shot put and eighth in the discus.

Kentlake’s Zach Smith was second in the long jump and third in the triple jump.

In the girls meet, Danyell Wilson of Kentridge placed fourth in the 100 meters and fifth in the 200. Chargers teammate Laura Tesch was second in the long jump and fourth in the high jump. Tricia Vuong was third in the javelin and fifth in the 400 meters. KR’s KaraLea Follmer finished sixth in the shot put and seventh in the discus.

Ferin Barry of Kent-Meridian took third place in the 300 hurdles, and tied with teammate Kelsey Bueno for third in the pole vault.

Jordan Powers of Kentlake wound up fourth in the triple jump and sixth in the pole vault.

K-M’s boys were among the top eight in all four relays: fourth in the 400, third in the 800, eighth in the 1,600 and fifth in the 3,200.

The Kentridge and Kent-Meridian girls were top-8 finishers in three relays. KR fourth in the 400, second in the 800 and eighth in the 1,600. K-M took sixth in goth the 400 and 3,200 and was seventh in the 1,600.

Enumclaw’s Stephanie Jones was the star of the girls meet, winning three events: the triple jump (37 feet, 7 inches), the 100 hurdles (15.71 seconds) and the 300 hurdles (48.15). Hornets teammate Mileka Grager captured the discus (113-6) and javelin (117-0).

Ty Lang of Heritage was a triple winner on the boys side, leading he way in the long jump (21-4), 100 meters (11.13) and 200 meters (22.85).

ALSO: Laura Tesch and Danyell Wilson won two events apiece, and the Kentridge girls took 13 of the 16 events altogether in an 87-44 South Puget Sound League North Division track victory against Decatur last Thursday. That put the Chargers (1-2) into the win column for the first time this season. Tesch won the high jump (5 feet even) and the long jump (15-5). Wilson took the 100 meters (13.0 seconds) and the 200 (27.4). … Kent-Meridian’s girls won two of the three relays on the way to a 77-63 victory against Federal Way. … Kentridge’s boys won just five of the 16 events, but got a boost from its depth to edge Decatur, 68-67. Ren Ong (long jump), Derrick Yi (triple jump), Evan Rodgers (pole vault) and Preston Ehrlich (110 hurdles) all won, as did KR’s 400 relay. … Federal Way maintained its lead atop the SPSL North at 3-0 by beating Kent-Meridian, 75.5-60.5. Ahmed Awalle was the only multiple winner for the Royals (2-1), taking the 1,600 and 3,200.

BOYS SOCCER: Wright scores four for Falcons

Tyler Wright got a hat trick and then some for the Kentlake Falcons last Friday night.

Wright put in four consecutive goals as Kentlake bounced back from a loss to rout the Federal Way Eagles in a South Puget Sound League North Division game, 5-1.

Troy Brunner got the Falcons (3-1-0, 9 points) on the board just seven minutes into the game, with Joseph Nobili earning the assist. Wright then scored four during a span of 20 minutes: one in the 24th minute, then the 30th, 40th and 44th. Two of those were unassisted; Allen Shour and Danny Blashaw assisted on the other two.

ALSO: The Kentridge Chargers added to their point total for the third time in four games this spring, playing to a 1-1 tie against Decatur in a South Puget Sound League North Division contest last Friday. Jesse Jensen scored the goal for Kentridge (2-1-1, 7 points) in the 22nd minute, with an assist to Sean Dunn. Decatur (1-2-1, 4 points) tied it just one minute before halftime on a goal by Jarod Johnson. … Kent-Meridian picked up its first point of the season, playing to a 1-1 tie with Tahoma. Daniel Valdovinos scored on an assist from Michael Koehler in the 36th minute for the Royals (0-3-1, 1 point), but Evan Denmark tied it in the 57th minute for Tahoma (0-2-2, 2 points).
