Thursday night, Kentwood and the Auburn Riverside will face off in Covington for the first of their two meetings this season.
With the Ravens jumping up to the Class 4A South Puget Sound League North Division after dominating the SPSL 3A the past two years, everyone seems to be talking about the Conks versus the Ravens.
“Our number one game right now is Kentwood,” Auburn Riverside guard Mercedes Wetmore said. “I know the point guard over there and we’ve played AAU, so it’s a big rivalry. She and their team are going to want it almost as bad as we do, but we want it more. But they’re a great team, obviously.”
Although the games themselves could determine the eventual winner of the SPSL North, the addition of Auburn Riverside to the mix also bodes well for all of the teams in the league.
“We’re excited,” Kentwood’s Lindsey Moore said. “We’re up to the challenge. It’s better to play better teams in the league because it prepares you for state. Last year, I think we were hurt by not playing in any close games.”
Kentwood coach Keith Hennig agrees.
“It will be nice,” Hennig said. “The last couple of years I think our league has been a little down in terms of quality teams. We’ve got Riverside, and Federal Way is returning all their players from last year. So there should be a lot more quality games against some quality teams this year.”
