Momentum is on the side of the Kentwood High girls basketball team.
Behind their usual three-pronged attack of Kylie Huerta, Liz Mills and Courtney Johnson, the Conquerors dispatched Kentridge 66-22 Friday night at the ShoWare Center in the Les Schwab Kent Shootout.
Mills delivered a team-high 16 points, Huerta added 15 and Johnson powered her way to 13.
It was the eighth win in a row for the Conquerors (12-0, 13-3).
“I think we definitely have momentum right now,” Huerta said. “I think we’re improved from last year. Our goal is to win state.”
As much was evident Friday night against the Chargers (2-11, 2-14). The Conquerors led from start to finish. Kentwood bolted out of the gate with a 14-6 first quarter, and extended the advantage to 31-14 by halftime. The lead grew to 53-17 by the end of the third quarter, when the Conquerors unloaded their bench.
Playing at the ShoWare is invaluable, Huerta noted.
“It’s just a great place to play and it helps us get ready for state,” she said.
Sydney Dupuis and Marisa Carpenter led the Chargers with six points apiece.
Along with her team-leading 16 points, Mills also collected a game-high 13 rebounds.
