The Seattle Sounders FC have acquired goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann with the No. 1 pick in the Major League Soccer allocation draft.
Hahnemann, 40, returns to the MLS after 13 years playing in the English Premiere League.
“Adding Marcus for the final stretch gives us experience and quality on and off the field to supplement our current core of goalkeepers,” said Sounders FC coach Sigi Schmid.
Hahnemann, who attended and played soccer at Kentridge High School before transferring to Newport for his senior year, was a three-time All-American at Seattle Pacific University and helped lead the Falcons to the Division II national championship in 1993.
Hahnemann began his professional career with the Sounders’ A-League team in 1994.
He played for the Colorado Rapids of the MLS from 1997 to 1999 before joining Fulham FC of the Premier League in 1999. He also played with Reading FC, Wolverhampton and most recently, Everton FC in England.
Hahnemann also was a member of the U.S. National team and was on the 2006 and 2010 World Cup roster.
“This is where I started my career and I wanted to finish here,” Hahnemann said. “This is what we’ve always dreamed would happen in Seattle, and what I always wanted when I was here.”
Hahnemann will be added to the Sounders’ roster pending receipt of his International Transfer Clearance.
