The Everett Silvertips defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 4-1 Saturday night at the ShoWare Center in Kent in the last preseason game for both Western Hockey League teams.
The T-Birds will open the 2011-12 regular season against the Portland Winterhawks at 7:05 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24 at the ShoWare Center.
At the home opener, the T-Birds will have a pre-game “Party on the Plaza” at ShoWare Center that will feature food, music and a beer garden prior to the home opener. The T-Birds will hand out out 2011-12 Magnetic Season Schedules presented by Beacon Plumbing to all fans.
Everett took a 1-0 lead on an unassisted goal by Josh Winquist at 13:44 of the first period.
Seattle led 9-8 in shots on goal after the first period.
The Silvertips took a 2-0 lead at 8:37 of the second period on a goal from Michael Bell. Dominik Bittner and Jari Erricson had the assists.
Seattle goalie Michael Salmon was replaced by Daniel Cotton halfway through the second period. Salmon made 13 saves on 15 shots and was credited with the loss. Cotton stopped 14 of 16 shots in his half of the game.
Seattle cut the Tips lead to one goal when Brendan Rouse scored at 15:47 of the second. Rouse was behind the Everett net and threw the puck into the crease. The puck deflected off Everett goalie Luke Siemens’ right skate and into the net. Justin Hickman and Connor Sanvido had the assists on Rouse’s first goal of the preseason.
The Thunderbirds led 21-17 in shots after two periods by outshooting Everett 12-9 in the second period.
Tyler Giebel scored the Silvertips third goal in the third period at 2:45 assisted by Vladimir Dolnik and Bell.
Everett scored a power-play goal at 19:19 of the third to make it a 4-1 lead. Kohl Bauml scored off assists from Ryan Murray and Brennan Yadlowski.
Everett finished the game with a 31-24 advantage in shots.
Siemens made 23 saves on 24 shots for Everett.
