Dress Code is finally having his consistency rewarded at Emerald Downs.

The steady 5-year-old caught runaway leader Wowie Maui in deep stretch and scored a 1 ¾ -length victory Friday in the $13,300 feature race for 3 year olds and up.

With Leslie Mawing riding, Dress Code ran one mile in 1 minute, 36.02 seconds on a fast track and paid $8, $3.80 and $2.80. Chris Stenslie is the trainer for owners Dan Halvorson and Dr. Rodney Orr.

Dress Code has won two of his last three starts after beginning his career with just one victory in 24 starts. The Kentucky-bred son of Doneraile Court has been a good earner, though, finishing first, second or third in 18-of-27 starts with earnings of $85,477. His lifetime mark is 3-10-5 in 27 races.

Ridden patiently by Mawing, Dress Code waited in fifth place as Wowie Maui carved out fractions of :23.92, :46.51 and 1:10.13 for six furlongs. Wowie Maui was four lengths clear into the stretch, but tired in the final furlong, and Dress Code swept by for the win.

Wowie Maui, the 2-to-1 betting favorite with Juan Gutierrez aboard, held second and paid $3.40 and $2.60.

Go With Gusto, Joe Crispin riding, was some 20 lengths behind the leader on the backstretch, and closed strongly to finish third. Go With Gusto paid $2.80.

Noble Juan, Cat On Base, Lake Swayer and Zagreus completed the order of finish.

NOTES: Mawing rode two winners to extend his lead to 96-80 over Juan Gutierrez in the Thoroughbred jockey standings.

Crispin also rode two winners.

There is a Pick 5 carryover of $4,645 to Saturday’s races.

From 1-1:20 p.m., Washington Hall of Fame Jockey Vicky Baze will be Pollowitz’s featured guest at the popular new Paddock Preview. Baze will discuss her mount on Del Siete Leguas in the $40,000 WTBOA Lads Stakes and her remarkable 2,000-victory career.

First post Saturday is 2:15 p.m.
