The Kentridge High School Dance Team, the Chatelaines, received glowing marks at last weekend’s state competition in Yakima at the SunDome.
The Chatelaines received first place in show with a routine inspired by the Wizard of Oz.
“We took on the iconic movie and narrowed it down to four minutes,” said co-coach Ashley Naset. “We had an optical illusion within our routine (where) we had the witch melt all the way down. It was a difficult thing to do, but we succeeded.”
Receiving all marks in the superior category, the Chatelaines also came in third place in dance and in second place with their Elvis-themed kick routine Naset described as a “crowd pleaser.”
Another recognition was given to the fathers of the dancers who helped build their sets. All 15 parents received the WIAA Sportsmanship Award medal for helping the other teams with their sets as well.
Naset and other co-coach, Staci Mattson, jointly received Coach of the Year for 4A SPSL.
“We were extremely honored,” Naset said. “We have a really successful program. We’ve won 15 state titles in the last 12 years so we’re keeping it going.”
