The Kent-based Tacoma Stars defeated the Maryzillians 5-2 on Sunday to secure the bronze medal at the North American Sand Soccer Championships at Virginia Beach, Va.
The Stars’ lone loss in the tournament came in their semifinal matchup with The U BSC.
For the tournament, the Stars continued their scoring ways as MASL MVP and scoring champion Nick Perera tallied 13 goals for the tournament. Stars veteran Cory Keitz added five and Danny Waltman combined with Ontario goalkeeper Chris Toth to anchor the team’s defense.
The team suffered some setbacks over the weekend and had players sidelined as they moved through the brackets. Perera was pleased with how the squad handled the situation.
“I’m extremely proud of the effort we put in,” he said. “We had some bad injuries and our numbers dwindled throughout the matches. To come in third and play like we did is an incredible accomplishment.”
Perera is also a member of the U.S. National Beach Soccer Team, which recently clinched a berth to the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup, Nov. 21-Dec. 1 in Paraguay.
