It wasn’t pretty, but the Kentwood High baseball team (16-8) earned a state berth in its first district playoff game Tuesday night with a 15-7 win over Gig Harbor at Heritage Park in Puyallup.
“We didn’t play very good defense and didn’t pitch very well, but we came to hit,” said Kentwood coach Jon Aarstad.
Kentwood scored three runs in the first inning and three more in the second to take a 6-4 lead. The Tides hung around much of the night thanks to five Kentwood errors.
“It’s nice to be able to get into the state tournament and have that berth solidified, and not have to play a loser-out game,” Aarstad said. “But we still have a lot of things to work on.”
Kyle Green picked up the win with 4 1/3 innings of relief. Kyle Doyle led the offense with two hits and four runs batted in. Cash McGwire also scored four runs in the win.
Kentwood has advanced to state in each of the last three years, and seven of the last eight years.
