Marcia Joanne Golubic

Marcia Joanne Golubic passed away Friday, December 12, 2008, at her home in Puyallup. She was 56, and is now at peace after a prolonged battle with illness.Marcia was born in Kent, WA, and attended local schools, graduating from Kent Meridian in 1970. She did well in her studies and was accomplished as a piano accompanist for the school choir. She enjoyed a devoted group of friends, many of whom remained close after graduation.Marcia was a great believer in education and pursued numerous degrees. She attended Green River Community College and graduated with an Associate’s degree in 1979. Next came a Bachelor’s from University of Puget Sound and a Master’s from Pacific Lutheran University culminating in a PhD in Organizational Development from Greenwich University.Marcia was a hard worker and enjoyed a number of jobs while attending college. She worked in a small clothing shop, streamlining the operation and improving sales during her stay.A stint at the Kent News Journal revealed a talent for newspaper layout which she enjoyed and pursued at two other newspapers: the Bellevue Herald and the Enumclaw Journal.But Marcia’s true calling came when she entered the sphere of social work. She applied for and was accepted to a position with the City of Tacoma as Senior Information and Assistance Specialist. There she met Denise Mecartea, who became Marcia’s closest friend. Marcia moved from her position at the City of Tacoma to the United Way of Pierce County. While at the United Way, she de-veloped and implemented the Help Line for Social Services, which has helped to connect the available resources of the community with those in need.After leaving the United Way, Marcia joined the Indochinese Cultural & Service Center as Executive Director. She served for nine years and was instrumental in establishing the Southeast Asian Foodbank, which serves three mealsites. She worked hard to obtain funding and to develop and maintain the operation of the center during her tenure. She loved and was loved by the Asian community in Tacoma, and will be sorely missed.Marcia was always a wonderful hostess, cook and entertainer. She loved to laugh, often due to an offbeat sense of humor that found amusement in the oddest places. She loved her niece and nephew, who were never far from her thoughts; she often sent them “treasures” that made them laugh. Marcia had an innate sense of style that was evident in her manner, in her home and in her dealings with people. She had an undeniable presence.Marcia also loved music and to dance. She regularly visited the Eagles with her mother to listen and dance to the music. Her license plate frame read “Goin’ Dancing”.Marcia married Stephen Golubic in 1977 and they remained to-gether until 1993. He continued to be a close friend until her death and grieves with the family.Marcia was preceded in death by her father Roger, who passed away in 1987. She is survived by her mother Dorothy, her brother Richard, and her niece and nephew, Sarah and Peter. We know that she is at peace now, and she will live on in our hearts.A “Rememberance” gathering will be held at the Holy Family of Jesus Church (1427 E. 40th St., Tacoma, WA 98405) on Saturday, December 27, at 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The family has asked that any contributions to be made in memory of Marcia be directed to: SE Asian Foodbank, HFJ Community Services, P.
