Man killed in shootout with Federal Way police

Police have not yet determined if the man was struck by police gunfire

One man was killed after shooting at officers, who returned gunfire, on Sunday evening, Nov. 13 at a Federal Way apartment complex, according to police.

Around 6:25 p.m., patrol officers responded to reports of a shooting incident where a man shot his sister when she arrived at the Park at Dashpoint Apartments, 31736 50th Lane SW, to check on his well-being, according to Cmdr. Kurt Schwan of the Federal Way Police Department.

The woman’s injuries were serious, but not life-threatening. She was taken by friends to St. Francis Hospital prior to police arrival, Schwan said.

Police contained the man’s apartment. As officers removed neighbors from the scene, the man fired more shots from inside the apartment. The man reportedly then came to a window and fired at police officers, who returned gunfire, Schwan said.

Police have not determined if the man was struck by police gunfire, but after officers fired at him, he was no longer responsive to continued communication efforts, Schwan said.

SWAT officers entered the apartment, found the man and initiated aid until relieved by medics. The man died at the scene, Schwan said. No officers were injured.

The two involved Federal Way police officers are placed on administrative leave. This incident is being investigated by the Valley Independent Investigation Team (VIIT). The Port of Seattle Police Department is the lead investigating agency.

VIIT is a multi-agency team of investigators from seven South King County police departments (Auburn, Des Moines, Federal Way, Kent, Renton, Port of Seattle and Tukwila). As this incident involved the Federal Way Police Department, all Federal Way staff are excluded from this VIIT investigation.
