King County Sheriff’s Office detectives are investigating an apparent homicide after a suspect or suspects shot a man the deputies were trying to check on during the early morning of July 15.
As of the early afternoon July 17, no suspects were in custody, and the case remains an active investigation, according to Sheriff’s Office public information officer Sgt. Eric White.
No gunshots were fired by sheriff’s office deputies in the incident, White said.
The shooting occurred during a wellness check early in the morning July 15 at the intersection of South 320th Street and Military Road South, just east of the city limits of Federal Way, White said.
KCSO patrol deputies were attempting to check on a person seen in the back side of the property of the 3900 block of South 320th Street; an ARCO gas station is located in that vicinity. At that time, around 2:42 a.m., two vehicles in the area “sped off” and fired two shots, White said. The person deputies were checking on was struck by gunfire and pronounced dead on scene.
The sheriff’s office followed the two vehicles, but the vehicles ultimately eluded patrol from the area of the shooting.
Detectives from the Major Crimes unit responded to the scene, White said. The Sheriff’s Office declined to release further information on the incident.
