A multi-vehicle accident Monday on State Route 167 resulted in the death of a toddler and injuries to four other people.

The accident occurred at 4:51 p.m. on milepost 25.5 of the busy thoroughfare, in the Renton area.

A 2-year-old Redmond girl, who was a passenger in a 2000 Toyota Camry in the accident, died from her injuries Wednesday morning, according to Washington State Patrol Sgt. Keith Trowbridge.

The accident occurred when a 1996 pickup truck driven northbound by an 18-year-old Kent man struck the back of the Camry. The Camry, which had been stopped in traffic, was pushed into the back of the vehicle in front of it, a 1997 Volkswagen Passat sedan driven by a 49-year-old Kirkland man.

“Vehicle one (the truck) didn’t notice that traffic was stopped,” Trowbridge said.

The Camry, driven by a 29-year-old Bothell man, was totaled, as was the pickup truck.

The driver of the Camry, as well as his passengers: the Redmond toddler, a 5-year-old girl from Everett and a 26-year-old woman from Redmond; were transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. The toddler was transferred to Children’s Hospital, where she died. The King County Medical Examiner’s office confirmed Wednesday they were investigating the death.

The driver of the pickup truck was transported to Valley Medical Center in Renton.

Trowbridge on Wednesday didn’t have an update as to the extent of the remaining injured, nor a report if any had been released from the hospital.

The driver of the Passat wasn’t injured, but his car sustained $5,000 in damage.

Everyone had been using seat belts.

Trowbridge said investigation was continuing and that no arrests had been made. He said the investigation was unlikely to result in criminal charges, but that there could be resulting civil charges.
