Kentwood High School in Covington went into a brief lockdown early Thursday afternoon, Jan. 11 after a student reportedly had a pellet gun on campus.
At 12:11 p.m., the King County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center received a 911 call about a student on campus with a firearm, according to an email from Sgt. Eric White, public information officer for the sheriff’s office.
Covington Police, which contracts with the sheriff’s office, was dispatched to the school, 25800 164th Ave. SE, which is part of the Kent School District.
“The school was placed into lockdown for safety reasons,” White said. “The student was located, detained and the firearm was determined to be a pellet gun and not a real firearm.”
The school was then taken out of lockdown.
Covington Police arrested the student for investigation of possessing a dangerous weapon on school facilities, White said.
The incident remains an active and open investigation, White said. He said he did not have information to release about the gender or age of the student.
