Sound Publishing’s weekly newspapers serving South King County communities won big at the Washington Newspaper Publishers Association (WNPA) awards in Bellingham on Oct. 8.
In the 2022 Better Newspaper Contest, 48 participating newspapers submitted 231 advertising entries, 1,166 news entries and 280 photography entries, among other divisions, for judges’ consideration. The contest was judged by the South Dakota Press Association.
The Kent Reporter newspaper took home third place in the Group 4 General Excellence category, a coveted award by all local weekly newspapers. This honor is awarded to Kent Reporter Advertising Director Carol Greiling, Sales Representative Marie Skoor, Editorial Director Andy Hobbs and Reporter Steve Hunter.
Hunter won first place in the Lifestyle Feature category with a story about a Kent couple, Roland and Bobbie (Barbara) Allen, who celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary on May 31, 2021.
Hunter’s story on a unity rally for Ukraine placed third in the Short News Story category. His story on the city of Kent paying a $4.4 million settlement to the family of 20-year-old Giovonn Joseph-McDade, who was shot and killed by Kent police officers in 2017, after the family filed a civil rights lawsuit placed second in the Crime and Court Story category.
Hunter snagged another second place in the General Feature (Long) story category for his coverage of a Kent man reuniting with his Afghan family at SeaTac Airport last year.
The WNPA is an organization that advocates for community newspapers in Washington state, freedom of the press and open government. The association is dedicated to helping members advance editorial excellence, financial viability, professional development, and a high standard of publication quality and community leadership.
