The Comcast service outage on Nov. 30-Dec. 1 covered approximately 25 square miles in Kent, whose city borders cover about 34 square miles.
Customers lost internet, TV and phone service early Thursday morning, Nov. 30 after vandals cut cable lines on the East Hill. Comcast restored service at about 3 a.m. Friday, Dec. 1.
When asked how many customers were without service, a Comcast spokesperson said the company discloses impacted geography rather than customer count.
”I can tell you that the parts of Kent that were impacted include the Kent Vista central area (a Comcast description), which is approximately 25 square miles,” according to a Dec. 1 email from a company spokesperson.
The city of Kent covers about 34 square miles, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, with a population of 134,400 in 2022.
A Comcast outage map during the incident had several dots that each listed impacts of more than 2,000 customers, the highest level on the chart.
“Full service restoration was complete as of 3 a.m. (Dec. 1),” the spokesperson said. “The damaged cables needed to be replaced and all fiber strands needed to be respliced.”
Kent Police are investigating to try to track down the person or people who cut the cable lines. Vandals go after the lines in an effort to steal copper that can be sold as scrap metal.
