Cedar River Salmon Journey events allow close look at spawning salmon

Seattle Aquarium to host events every weekend in October at multiple Cedar River locations.

As salmon return to the rivers and creeks where they were born to spawn a new generation this Fall, naturalists and educators from the Seattle Aquarium will be at locations along the Cedar River in Renton and Maple Valley to allow folks around the Puget Sound to see the salmon in their natural habitat and to learn about the spawning process.

The Cedar River Salmon Journey events will occur every weekend in October from 11am to 4pm at several locations including:

Renton Library at 100 Mill Ave S in Renton, where visitors can stand directly above the river and watch the spawning salmon while also being able to see the many human changes to the Cedar River.

Cedar River Park at 1717 Maple Valley Highway in Renton, where visitors can see how some salmon are removed for the hatchery.

Riverview Park at 3201 Maple Valley Highway in Renton, where spawning salmon can be seen from a bridge that passes over the river.

Belmondo Reach Natural Area at 16248 SE Cedar Mountain Place in Renton, where visitors can see a salmon habitat restoration site where plants and trees have been planted to benefit the riparian zone.

Landsburg Park at SE 252nd PI & Landsburg Rd. SE in Ravensdale where visitors can see salmon redds where they have laid their eggs in the river gravel.

For more information call 206-792-5851 or email salmonjourney@seattleaquarium.org.

According to the Seattle Aquarium, the Cedar River contributes over 50% of Lake Washington’s inflow and provides two-thirds of the water used by residents and businesses in King County.
