A head-on crash injured two men at about 3:30 p.m. Friday on the West Valley Highway near South 208th Street.

Both drivers, who were alone in their vehicles, sustained minor to moderate injuries and were transported by paramedics to local hospitals for further medical evaluation, according to a Kent Fire Department media release.

“There were pretty minor injuries compared to what could have happened,” said Don Barberie, Kent Fire Department spokesman, in a phone interview Friday. “Broken bones were about it (for the small car driver). He was talking to us.”

The airbags deployed in both vehicles.

“Airbags are an amazing thing and I think the airbags saved both of these guys,” Barberie said. “Around 20 years ago, we would have had dead people.”

The accident closed the northbound lanes of the highway for about an hour.

A small import car and a sports utility vehicle collided in the center lane at an unknown rate of speed.

Kent firefighters had to cut the man out of the import car with the Jaws of Life.

Both drivers appeared to be in their 20s, Barberie said.

As of Friday, Kent Police were investigating the cause of the accident.
