A field of 165 kids – youth and teens 14 and under – tried their luck at the annual Fishing Experience at the Old Fishing Hole on May 18.

Kent Rotary and Kent Parks and Recreation presented the event.

The pond was stocked with 2,700 trout prior to the event – 1,500 from the state and 1,200 from Rotary. Children under 15 years old registered through Kent Parks to attend with an adult. Each child was allowed 20 minutes to try to catch up to two fish, with the help of 22 volunteers. About 100 fish were caught in five hours. Rotarians also cleaned the fish and repaired the fishing gear as needed.

An unusual fall of cottonwood seeds caused the pond to be covered with a layer of fluff that fouled up many of the fishing lines. Many children still experienced the joy of catching their first fish, something their parents and the volunteers loved to see.
