Kent Police are investigating a single-car accident that killed a 50-year-old woman driver when her car smashed into a tree near South 200th Street and the East Valley Highway.
The accident occurred at about 2:15 p.m. Thursday. The East Valley Highway also is known as 84th Avenue South.
As Kent Police and Fire units arrived, they received reports that the female driver was pinned inside of the vehicle and smoke was coming from the engine. Firefighters were able to remove the driver, and flames were extinguished. The driver was unconscious as firefighters and medics attempted to stabilize her.
The life-saving efforts were unsuccessful and the woman died as a result of the injuries she sustained. There were no other reported injuries and the identity of the driver is not being released at this time.
Kent Police Traffic investigators responded to the scene and are investigating the circumstances that contributed to the collision. The investigation is still underway, and lane restrictions will impact the evening commute through that area.
