A 29-year-old Redmond woman faces a felony hit-and-run charge for allegedly hitting and killing a 29-year-old Kent man walking on Sept. 9 along 132nd Avenue Southeast.
Gracey K. Pearson is scheduled to be arraigned on Oct. 9 at the Maleng Regional Justice Center in Kent, according to the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office. Pearson remains in the county jail in Seattle with bail set at $150,000.
D’maine Dugar died from injuries suffered after he was struck by a vehicle at about 4:30 a.m. in the 20800 block of 132nd Avenue Southeast. He was walking northbound on the west shoulder of the road, according to court documents.
“Pearson drove from her father’s home to her boyfriend’s home,” wrote Senior Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Amy Freedheim in charging papers. “On the way, she struck a pedestrian, D’maine Dugar, and killed him. It appears from the debris left at the scene that she crossed into the oncoming lane where she struck him. He was thrown into the ditch off the side of the road.
“The defendant did not call the police or stay at the scene. She drove to her boyfriend’s house. After they confirmed that the police were involved, they abandoned her a car (a black 1998 Honda CRV) a couple of blocks from his house and fled the state in his car.”
Pearson left a message for her father admitting that she had committed the hit-and-run crime, Freedheim said.
The police report and court documents didn’t indicate what might have caused Pearson to lose control of her vehicle as she drove along 132nd Avenue Southeast.
Proseutors charged Alec J. Fleck, 20, of Kent, the boyfriend of Pearson, with second-degree criminal assistance for reportedly helping Pearson flee the state.
“He was seen picking at the evidence on the windshield of his girlfriend’s car that was found to contain what appear to be blood and hairs from the pedestrian strike,” Freedheim said.
Pearson and Fleck were arrested Sept. 12 by Glendale Police in Glendale, Colo., for shoplifting. Police connected the vehicle they were driving with the hit and run in Kent after Kent Police issued a “be on the lookout notice” (BOLO) for the Honda Accord the pair fled in. Fleck will be arraigned once he returns to Washington from Colorado. Both defendants waived extradition.
Kent Police found Pearson’s Honda CRV abandoned on a dead end street at 133rd Place Southeast and South 262nd Street, just blocks from her boyfriend’s home, according to court documents. The vehicle had blood and hair on it and was missing its right front reflector/side marker and had other damage consistent with striking a pedestrian.
