The Portland Winterhawks defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 10-4 Saturday night in a Western Hockey League game at the Moda Center in Portland.
The loss was the T-Birds’ first of the season after winning the opening three games of the campaign.
Portland (2-1-0-1) got four goals from Oliver Bjorkstrand and two goals each from Nic Petan and Adam De Champlain. Taylor Leier and Keegan Iverson also scored for the Winterhawks.
Seattle (3-1-0-0) scored all their goals in the third period. Alexander Delnov scored at 10:37 on the power play. Shea Theodore scored an unassisted goal at 12:18 and Mathew Barzal potted his first career WHL goal at 15:50. Theodore scored the final T-Birds goal at 18:39 of the third.
Theodore’s first goal was not initially called a goal as his wrist shot went past Portland goalie Brendan Burke and through the net. Play continued for at least four more minutes before a whistle stopped play. The play was reviewed and it was determined that Theodore has scored his first goal of the year.
Both teams had 38 shots on goal in the game.
Seattle goalie Danny Mumaugh made 19 saves on 25 shots and his record is now 1-1-0-0. Justin Myles replaced Mumaugh after Portland’s sixth goal.
Myles stopped nine of 13 shots in 16 minutes of action.
Portland goalie Brendan Burke stopped 34 of 38 shots and his record is now 2-1-0-1.
