Brendan Leipsic and Oliver Bjorkstrand each had two goals Saturday night to lead the Portland Winterhawks to an 8-2 victory over the Seattle Thunderbirds at the ShoWare Center.
The T-Birds take on the Everett Silvertips at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday at thee ShoWare.
Portland (20-4-1-0) took a 1-0 lead 30 seconds into the game when Troy Rutkowski scored on a wrist shot. Taylor Peters and Derrick Pouliot had the assists.
The Winterhawks made it a 2-0 lead on a power-play goal by Brendan Liepsic at 15:01 of the first period. Ty Rattie and Nic Petan had the assists.
Portland outshot Seattle 17-5 in the first period.
Leipsic scored 57 seconds into the second period to extend the Winterhawks lead to 3-0. Rattie and Pouliot were credited with the assists.
Portland struck again at 2:26 of the second on a goal from Nic Petan. Rattie and Leipsic had the assists.
Justin Myles replaced Brandon Glover in net after Portland’s fourth goal. Glover stopped 16 of 20 shots in just over 22 minutes of action.
The Winterhawks went in front 5-0 at 6:04 of the second when Chase De Leo scored an unassisted goal.
Oliver Bjorkstrand scored a power-play goal at 11:28 of the second to get Portland’s sixth goal. Leipsic had the only assist on the goal.
Both teams had 11 shots on goal in the third period.
Seattle (11-12-1-0) got on the board 16 seconds into the third period when Connor Honey banged home a Roberts Lipsbergs pass from behind the net. Alexander Delnov got the puck free to Lipsbergs. Lipsbergs skated backwards to the right corner and then was able to find Honey in the left circle with a cross slot pass.
Bjorkstrand scored at 5:40 of the third to get Portland’s seventh goal. De Leo and Seth Jones had the assists.
The T-Birds answered back 23 seconds later when Luke Lockhart scored his 11th goal of the season. Justin Hickman made a blind pass to Lockhart in the slot. Lockhart snapped the puck past Portland goalie Mac Carruth on the glove side for the goal. Riley Sheen had the second assist on the goal.
Portland got an eighth goal at 11:13 of the third when Presten Kopeck scored. Adam De Champlain and Kirill Vorobev were credited with the assists.
Portland outshot Seattle 40-29 in the game.
Myles made 16 saves on 20 shots in his 37 minutes of action.
Carruth stopped 27 of 29 shots and his record is now 11-1-0-0.
