Winds in Kent knock down trees, powerlines; streets closed

West Valley Highway and East Valley Highway impacted Monday, Jan. 9

Wind knocked down trees and powerlines and closed several streets Monday morning, Jan. 9 in Kent.

The city of Kent closed SE 204th Street between 105th Court NE and 104th Place SE; West Valley Highway at South 190th Street; and the northbound lanes of East Valley Highway between South 202nd Street and South 200th Street due to downed trees and/or powerlines, according to the Public Works Department and Puget Sound Fire.

As of early afternoon, power outages continued to impact 316 customers in the north Kent and Tukwila areas and 82 customers in unincorporated King County just east of the Kent city limits and north of Pacific Raceways, according to Puget Sound Energy. Earlier power outages impacted several schools in the Kent School District, including Kentlake and Kentwood high schools, according to social media reports.

In Covington, a tree and lines were down on SE Wax Road near 193rd Avenue SE, according to the city of Covington.

Earlier in the morning, all lanes on both directions of State Route 18 between Issaquah-Hobart Road SE and Interstate 90 were closed due to fallen trees, according to the state Department of Transportation.

SeaTac had a wind gust of 59 mph at about 8:39 a.m., according to the National Weather Service. Peak gusts in Kent were between 32 and 35 mph.
