A 20-year-old man wanted for a shooting that injured a woman at a Kent American Legion hall in March has been captured in Pierce County.

Armed with an arrest warrant provided by Kent Police investigators, gang detectives from the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department went to a Spanaway residence Thursday evening looking for the man, according to a Kent Police media release. They found him in hiding at that location and took him into custody without incident.

The man’s arrest stems from a shooting that occurred shortly after 11 p.m. March 19 the American Legion Hall, 25405 97th Pl. S.

A large group of people, including a 43-year-old woman and her family, were leaving a private birthday party at the hall when shots rang out in the parking lot.

The investigation revealed that the woman was caught in a cross fire stemming from a fight between the 20-year-old man and other gang members. The assault left her with gunshot wounds to the shoulder and right arm. She was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with non-life threatening injuries. The other family members were shaken but unharmed.

At the time of his arrest, the man was discovered in possession of several firearms. Some of the weapons recovered were determined to be stolen.

“The Kent Police Department is very grateful for the assistance of the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department in capturing (the man),” said Kent Police Lt. Pat Lowery. “His arrest is a tremendous relief for the entire community.”

The man will be transferred to the King County Jail from Pierce County pending his first court appearance.
