Thirteen-year-old Lucas MacMillan left a city of Kent Parks volunteer event in the spring saying to his mother, “Everyone is so nice! I really want to do more of this community stuff.”
Gina MacMillan was touched by her son’s unprompted and genuine reaction so she passed it on to city parks staff and added, “Thank you for giving even the little kids an opportunity to help.”
The next chance for MacMillan and others to make a mark in their community is National Public Lands Day Sept. 25.
Volunteers are wanted from 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 25 to work at Turnkey Park, 23312 100th Ave. S.E. on the East Hill.
Due to limited parking at the park, volunteers should park at either the East Hill Elementary School, 9825 S. 240th St., or in the Fred Meyer lot. A white city shuttle van will pick people up at the school, beginning at 8:30 a.m.
Participants of all ages and abilities are welcome. Registration is required for planning purposes. The deadline is Sept. 22. Contact 253-856-5110 or download a registration form at www.KentWAParks.com, click on Volunteer.
The event goes on rain or shine.
Volunteers will plant two rain gardens, construct split-rail fencing, prune and mulch trees, and refurbish trails.
Tools and gloves are supplied, but extra shovels or pruners are always welcome. Volunteers are advised to wear sturdy shoes or boots (no flip-flops or sandals allowed) and dress for the weather.
Starbucks will provide coffee and hot chocolate. Water and snacks are also available.
