A 13-year veteran of the Kent Police Department has been fatally injured in a local traffic accident.
Officer Robin McCuistion, 53, was driving home early Thursday morning when his car left the roadway on Kersey Way Southeast in Auburn. The car traveled down a steep embankment and struck a tree. Officer McCuistion died of his injuries at the scene.
The Auburn Police Department is investigating the collision, which occurred at 12:25 a.m. Information regarding the circumstances of the crash is limited, but it is thought that adverse weather conditions may have contributed.
Officer McCuistion became a Kent Police officer in August 1997. Since that time he has spent his career working street patrol and response. For that reason, he was a familiar face to many in the community. Officer McCuistion was also a field training officer, working with police recruits preparing them for their street assignments.
The mood at the Kent Police Department is predictably somber. Police Chief Ken Thomas noted “This is a time of profound sadness for our Kent PD family. We’ve lost a valued officer and great friend.”
Officer McCuistion is survived by his wife and three grown children. The Kent Police Department has reached out to the McCuistion family to provide assistance and support during this time of need. Information regarding services for McCuistion has not yet been identified.
