A 21-year-old Kent woman and two Renton residents were killed in a head-on, three-vehicle crash early Sunday on Highway 167 in Auburn.
Brittany Meredith, 21, of Kent, was driving alone in a black 1998 Mazda Protege at about 1:35 a.m. Sunday when she entered the northbound lanes of the freeway at South 277th Street, reportedly in the wrong direction, according to a Washington State Patrol media release.
Moments after entering the freeway via the northbound off-ramp, the Mazda crossed three lanes and struck head-on into a green 1999 Honda Accord in the HOV lane, just south of South 277th Street.
Marina Martinez, 69, of Renton, the driver of the Honda, and her passenger, Cesar Martinez, 72, of Renton, were killed.
A third vehicle collided with the Mazda shortly after the initial head-on crash. Nobody was injured in the third vehicle, a silver 1999 BMW 740.
Meredith and Cesar Martinez were dead at the scene. Marina Martinez died later Sunday at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
Investigators, as of Monday, were trying to determine whether alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.
The northbound lanes of Highway 167 were closed for about three hours while troopers investigated the accident.
