Vandals cut Comcast cable lines in Kent early Thursday morning, Nov. 30 causing thousands of customers to lose internet, phone and TV service.

“Our network maintenance crews are actively working to replace the damaged lines and expect to get our customers back up and running between 8 and 10 p.m. this evening,” Comcast posted on its website at about 2 p.m. Nov. 30. “We know any time without service can be frustrating and appreciate our customer’s patience during this outage.”

Service was lost just before 5 a.m., according to Comcast outage maps, which listed several dots where more than 2,000 customers lost connections.

“The outage was caused by vandalism which is a growing challenge for internet service providers,” according to an email to the Kent Reporter from a Comcast spokesperson.

Questions to the spokesperson for a specific number of how many customers were impacted or how often this has happened recently in Kent went unanswered.

The cable was damaged in the 11003 to 11201 block of SE 196th St., according to a photo released by Comcast.

Comcast also reported it service down in the Graham area.

Damage to cable lines has been a problem across the nation as people try to take copper from the lines to sell as scrap metal, according to multiple media reports and the FBI.
