The Seattle Thunderbirds came back from two two-goal deficits, scored on a penalty shot with 29 seconds left to tie the game and then scored in overtime Friday night for a 5-4 victory over the Medicine Hat Tigers at the Medicine Hat Arena.

The T-Birds were down 4-3 late in the third period when they pulled goalie Danny Mumaugh for an extra attacker. The T-Birds were pressing around the net when a Medicine Hat player covered the puck in the crease with his hand. The referee awarded a penalty shot, giving the T-Birds the chance to tie the game and send it to overtime.

Seattle sent out Mathew Barzal to take the penalty shot. Barzal stickhandled towards Medicine Hat goalie Daniel Wapple, faked left, brought the puck back right and put it in the top right corner over the goalie.

The T-Birds started overtime strong and a good forecheck by Seth Swenson and Mitch Elliot helped win the game for the T-Birds. Swenson forced a turnover in the right corner. He brought the puck out of the corner and crashed the net. Wapple made the save but Elliot was on top of the crease and banged the rebound past the goalie for the winning goal.

It was Elliot’s first game of the season. He returned on Tuesday from the Training Camp of the Utica Comets of the AHL.

The T-Birds are in the midst of a six-game road trip. They are at the Lethbridge Hurricanes on Saturday at 6pm. They face the Kootenay Ice on Sunday at 5pm. They finish out road trip on Friday, October 11, at the Kelowna Rockets.

The Tigers took a 1-0 lead at 5:19 of the first period when Gavin Broadhead scored. Chad Labelle had the only assist on the goal.

Medicine Hat (4-2-0-0) took a 2-0 lead on a Hunter Shinkaruk goal at 14:23 of the first. Curtis Valk and Kyle Becker were credited with the assists.

Seattle (4-2-0-0) cut the Tigers lead to one goal at 16:31 of the first on the penalty kill. Evan Wardley sent the puck up the left boards. Seth Swenson chipped the puck to center ice and right to Justin Hickman for a breakaway. Hickman came down on Wapple and beat the goalie low on the glove side.

Shinkaruk got the Tigers the two-goal lead back at 17:48 of the first with a power-play goal. Tyler Lewington and Valk had the assists.

The T-Birds came right back and got their second goal at 19:32 of the third. Mathew Barzal won a faceoff to Shea Theodore at the point. Theodore beat Wapple with a slap shot for his third goal of the year.

The Tigers outshot the T-Birds 16-14 in the first period.

Seth Swenson tied the game 3-3 at 2:49 of the second period with his third goal of the season. Michal Holub moved the puck to Branden Troock behind the Medicine Hat net. Troock backhanded the puck to Swenson in the slot. Swenson beat Wapple over the glove for the goal.

The T-Birds outshot the Tigers 11-10 in the second period. The Tigers led 26-25 in total shots after 40 minutes.

Medicine took a 4-3 lead at 11:56 of the third period on a goal from Miles Koules. Valk and Becker had the assists.
