Sunnycrest Elementary, a Federal Way School District school located in Kent, will host an open house from 7-8 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 28.
Sunnycrest, along with Lakeland Elementary School, is among the last of five schools to be rebuilt with funding from the 2007 Federal Way School District bond measure.
Originally built in 1965, Sunnycrest was torn down and rebuilt between June 2010 and August 2011, at its original location, 24629 42nd Ave., S., on Kent’s West Hill, according to the Federal Way School District website.
Unlike other Federal Way schools rebuilt with 2007 bond funds, Sunnycrest’s footprint overlapped that of the original building, so staff and students moved offsite for the 2010-2011 school year.
The school is designed to be inviting and inspiring for children and staff. The new Sunnycrest features a nature theme and is painted in brilliant shades of green. Ceiling tiles and flooring give the sense of a flowing river, carried on through landscaping outside the school.
Windows overlook wetlands and a wooded area that will one day become a city of Kent park.
