Fire heavily damage an apartment Thursday morning in the 11100 block of Southeast 256th Street on the East Hill in Kent.
The fire broke out at about 9:20 a.m. at the Statford Arms Apartments. Cooking oil left unattended on the stove caused the fire, according to a Kent Regional Fire Authority investigator.
When firefighters arrived, they found smoke coming from the back side of the three-story building according to a Kent RFA media release.
A quick attack of the fire helped keep it from spreading to other units. Several of the units suffered from smoke damage and the apartment next to where the fire started had damage from a broken domestic water pipe.
People evacuated the apartment complex safely. There were no injuries. Red Cross will assist families displaced by the fire and the water damage.
