A 42-year-old Washington State Patrol trooper suffered minor injuries when his SUV collided with a semi at about 10:19 a.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Washington Avenue South and State Route 516 (aka Willis Street) in Kent.
The trooper was responding with lights and siren activated to back up a trooper on Interstate 5 about an individual with a knife and needed assistance as soon as possible, said State Patrol spokesman Rick Johnson in an email. The trooper was westbound on SR 516 approaching Washington Avenue and the semi southbound on Washington when the two vehicles arrived in the intersection at the same time.
The speeds were low and the State Patrol SUV was hit on the passenger side. The cause was failing to yield by the semi driver, who was not injured. The crash blocked the intersection for more than two hours.
As far as the I-5 incident, another trooper arrived and they were able to take a person into custody, Johnson said.
