For the second weekend in a row, a portion of I-405 in Renton will be closed for southbound drivers.

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) announced Wednesday that the southbound lanes from Sunset Boulevard Northeast (Exit 5) to State Route 167 will be closed from 11:59 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20, until 4 a.m. Monday, Sept. 23.

Like the previous southbound closure, WSDOT warns that these detours will not be able to accommodate normal I-405 traffic, stating that “travelers are advised to ‘know before you go,’ travel during off-peak hours or, if possible, delay discretionary travel to help minimize backups.” WSDOT says that the southbound closure is for drainage installation.

Travelers who are heading south will follow detour signage around the work zone, which will utilize Sunset Boulevard Northeast, Bronson Way North, Main Avenue South and South Grady Way — which means that traffic will be heavy in Renton.

There will also be a northbound closure of I-405, but it will be farther north near Bothell, from SR 522 to SR 527. The eastbound/westbound SR 522 on-ramps to northbound I-405, Northeast 195th Street/Beardslee Boulevard on-ramp and off-ramp and the SR 527 off-ramp (Exit 26) will all be closed.

This northbound closure will be from 11 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20, until 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 23, for paving. Detours will utilize East Riverside Drive, Bothell Way Northeast and Bothell Everett Highway.
