A winter blanket of snow covered the Puget Sound region Thursday morning, making roadways treacherous, delaying and closing schools and providing an inviting playground for families and children.

Up to 6 inches of snow fell overnight in some lowland areas, according to the National Weather Service.

Auburn, Kent and other cities reported receiving 2 or more inches of snow.

The snow and freezing temperatures caused problems on roadways.

A seven-car accident involving 10 people occurred at Highway 18 and southbound Interstate 5 near Federal Way on Wednesday night, according to South King Fire. No one was hurt in the pileup.

Snow and ice closed Lake Tapps Parkway in both directions at the hill, the Auburn Police Department tweeted at about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Once the snowfall ended, sunshine and clear skies ushered in a chilly Thursday.

The forest calls for more clouds and snow chances throughout the weekend, with cold nights.
