Smoke alarms help Kent family of five escape house fire

Firefighters rescue one male from roof in March 19 fire on East Hill

Smoke alarms alerted five family members to a late Tuesday night, March 19 fire in their Kent home and “quite possibly” saved their lives.

Firefighters rescued one of those family members from a roof at the home in the 12400 block of SE 259th Street on the East Hill, according to a March 20 email from Puget Sound Fire spokesperson Pat Pawlak.

“Family members were alerted about the fire by their working smoke alarms,” Pawlak said. “These working smoke alarms quite possibly saved the lives of these family members. Puget Sound Fire recommends that everyone tests their smoke alarms monthly.”

Firefighters responded at about 11:56 p.m. to the fire, which displaced the five family members. American Red Cross is assisting them with housing needs, Pawlak said.

Firefighters rescued a male, age unknown, from the roof. Firefighters and paramedics treated the male at the scene.

“The firefighters placed two ladders, side by side, and two firefighters assisted the person from the roof,” Pawlak said.

Eight fire department units responded to the incident, along with King County Medic One and the Zone 3 Fire Cadets, Pawlak said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
