Kent Police responded to a report about a shirtless man in his 50s punching vehicles at about 1:18 p.m. on May 29 near the intersection of East James Street and Central Avenue North.
When officers approached the man in the street, he reportedly refused several commands to sit on a curb, according to the police report. The man kept walking toward an officer, who then fired his Taser at the man and hit him in the stomach. The man dropped to the ground.
Police determined the same man had minutes earlier reportedly taken candy from the Circle K store, 720 Central Ave. N. The man walked into the store, opened a bag of Sour Patch Kids candy and began to eat the candy. A clerk told the man he needed to pay for the item. But the man exited the store, grabbing the clerk by the arm on the way out and threw a punch at him that missed.
Officers found out the man had numerous warrants, including one out of Federal Way for failing to appear on theft charges.
Car smashes into wall
Police arrested an 18-year-old man for investigation of reckless driving after he reportedly backed his vehicle into a restaurant wall and a few minutes later smashed his car into a parking garage wall.
Officers responded to a call about a vehicle crashing into a building at about 1:36 p.m. on May 27 in the 400 block of First Avenue North, according to the police report.
The man told officers he was standing outside watching a fight between two teenage girls when he heard a siren. He said he thought the police were coming so he jumped back into his car and tried to drive away quickly. He said he swerved to miss another car and ran into the side of the parking garage.
Witnesses told police that a short while earlier the man had sped through the nearby Taqueria El Rinconsito restaurant parking lot, pulled in behind another car in the drive through, backed up and struck a restaurant wall, then drove over a curb and grass and sped west on West Smith Street.
Man dines, doesn’t pay
Officers arrested a man for third-degree theft after he reportedly refused to pay for a meal he ate at about 3:45 a.m. on May 28 at Shari’s restaurant, 24525 Russell Road S.
The restaurant manager called 911 after the man ate a breakfast but didn’t pay for it, according to the police report.
The man ordered eggs, hash browns, an English muffin and a cup of hot chocolate. The man complained about a burnt muffin, so the waitress brought him another one. He ate both muffins.
The customer told restaurant staff he wasn’t going to pay the $13.45 bill because of the burnt muffin.
When an officer arrived and talked to the man, he said he didn’t have the money to pay for the food. When the officer asked him why he ordered food with no intention to pay for it, he said he planned to pay but had horrible service.
The officer found out the man only had $3 on him, so he wondered how the man planned to pay for the meal with that small amount of money. The man said the restaurant overcharged him.
Police banned the man for life from Shari’s at the manager’s request.
Woman with many names
Officers arrested a woman for investigation of obstructing an officer after she reportedly gave false names to police who responded to a call about a woman knocking on doors at about 9:45 p.m. on May 28 at the Kent Valley Motel, 743 Central Ave. S.
The woman allegedly knocked on the doors and tried to get into rooms, according to the police report. When officers arrived, they found the woman knocking on a room door.
She told police she was looking for a friend. When officers asked the woman to identify herself, she gave several names. Police booked her into the city jail as Jane Doe before jail officials confirmed her true name through the Oregon Department of Licensing. The woman had several aliases.
Inmate attacks inmate
Police arrested an inmate at the city jail for investigation of fourth-degree assault after he allegedly punched another inmate on May 30 in the laundry room.
The man walked into the laundry room and attacked the other inmate from behind, according to the police report. The man suffered a swollen face and injuries to his arm and back. He told officers he had no idea why the man attacked him.
Officers interviewed the man who threw punches in his cell. He told police he attacked the man for throwing a rock at his car, but he gave police no details about the alleged incident.
Officers noted that the man has an extensive history of attacking random people for unknown reasons. He was in custody for a previous assault.
