Seven horses died in a Kent barn fire early Monday morning near the 12900 block of Southeast 203rd Place, just east of Kentridge High School.
The fire was reported at 7:39 a.m., and firefighters could see a smoke column from a half-mile away, according to a Puget Sound Fire news release. When they got on scene, the firefighters from the Puget Sound and Renton regional fire authorities found the 40-x-40 barn to be fully engulfed in flames.
Because of the danger of collapse, firefighters worked “defensively,” meaning from the outside and not going into the heavily damaged structure. They also worked to protect another barn, which was approximately 50 feet away.
The property owner informed firefighters that the seven horses boarded in the barn were unable to get out.
A Puget Sound Fire investigator ruled that the cause of the fire will be undetermined because of too much damage to the structure.
