Teacher wins award
Jenkins Creek Elementary teacher Connie Compton was recognized on the TV program “Northwest Afternoon” April 16 with an “All Spreading the Love” award.
The “All Spreading the Love” mission is “to give recognition, love and encouragement to people that have contributed to beautifying the world. They have spread love in different ways to make the world we live in a much nicer place to live, love, and learn.”
Compton was nominated by a parent of one of her students, Joanna Cebulla, for being instrumental in her son’s development.
School plays continue
The spring theater season continues through April and May in the Kent School District with the opening of three high-school plays.
• Kentridge High School will present “Mack and Mabel” starting this month. Directed by Jenny Grajewski, the musical explores the fiery relationship between a movie director and his star actress and how circumstances and tragedy shape their lives. Show times are 7 p.m. April 30 and May 1, 2, 7, 8 and 9. Matinees are 1:30 p.m. May 3 and 10. Tickets are available at krtickets@comcast.net.
• Kent-Meridian High School’s drama club will present Thorton Wilder’s Pulitzer Prize-winning show “Our Town” in May. The show is directed by Jay Thorton.
Show times will be 7 p.m. May 8, 9 and 14-16. Tickets are $5 for students, children and senior citizens. Adult tickets are $8. Tickets can be purchased at the door up to 40 minutes before curtain.
• Kentwood High School’s Kentwood Players will present “Fiddler on the Roof” in May, the story of love and upheaval in early 20th century Russia.
The show is directed by Rebecca Lloyd. Show times are at 7 p.m. May 7-10 and 14-17 at the school’s performing arts center. Tickets are $10 at the door.
Award nominations due
KCTS Public Television is now accepting nominations for its 2008 Golden Apple Awards for Excellence in Education.
The awards honor innovative and successful teaching models and programs among educators and the public serving grades pre-K–12 in Washington. Nominees may be teachers, administrators, staff members, volunteers, educational or community programs or local businesses working in partnership with schools. All nomination forms must be postmarked to KCTS by April 30.
