The benefits of growing your own vegetables can go far beyond a healthy meal. Gardening is proven to be a stress reducer, provides exercise and helps stretch a family’s food budget.
King County Parks offers community garden plots for rent at North Green River Park in Kent. Each plot measures 10 feet wide by 40 feet long, and costs just $50 to rent per season. Plots are renewable from year to year.
The garden plots are located at a bend in the Green River near Central Avenue South and South 259th Street in Kent and are easily accessible from State Route 167. The land features enough sunny acreage for more than 100 garden plots where fresh vegetables and flowers can grow for months on end.
Registrations are now being accepted for garden plots. Download a registration form and driving directions at http://www.kingcounty.gov/recreation/parks.aspx. Click on “Rentals,” then “Community Gardens.” Mail the completed form with payment to the address printed on the form. Interested gardeners can also call 206-205-3661 to request an application form and a chart that shows the available plots.
Prospective gardeners can either visit the garden to choose a plot, or be assigned a plot by parks staff. More information is available by contacting King County Parks at 206-205-3661.
