Rotary chooses Turpin, Hollingsworth as top students

The Rotary Club of Kent honored Kentridge High School seniors Russell Turpin and Leah Hollingsworth as its Students of the Week for outstanding achievement in athletics.

Turpin is the son of Patrick and Patricia Turpin of Renton.

In school, Turpin excelled at both football and track. He earned all-league first team honors in football his junior and senior years. He also has served as captain of the football team. He earned a letter two years in football and one year in track for throwing javelin and shot put. He also made it to league and district competitions for both events.

Outside school, Turpin has been active in both sports and community service. He combined the two when he coached fourth-eighth graders over the summer at the Puget Sound Football Camp. He also participated as a link crew leader as a junior, and is an active participant at St. Stephen the Martyr Church.

After graduation, Turpin plans to attend college, and though he hasn’t settled on a particular college yet, he has been accepted at both Montana State and Boise State universities. Wherever he goes, he said he will try to continue with football and track.

Hollingsworth is the daughter of Rick and Traci Hollingsworth of Kent.

Her passion is golf. She has been a varsity member of the Kentridge Girls’ Golf team for four years, and this fall, she served as the team captain. She has competed at the district golf tournament every year, and will advance to the state tournament this spring.

Hollingsworth also has participated in the Junior Golf Program at Meridian Valley Country Club.

Hollingsworth enjoys singing. She is a member of the school choir, Rainier Youth Choir and the 2009 All-Northwest Choir. Hollingsworth’s other activities include participating in DECA, and Girls’ Honors.

Hollingsworth plans to attend college to major in communication, and to continue improving her golf skills on a college team.
