Kentwood High School went on lockdown this morning, after a student reported being threatened in the school parking lot.

The lockdown took place at 10 a.m.and was lifted after 45 minutes, as local law enforcement and district safety officers determined that all students and staff were safe.

Kent School District spokesman Chris Loftis said this morning that the student had driven onto school grounds, parking her car in the junior lot. A man driving a late-model Ford Expedition, who apparently had followed her in, pulled up to her, rolled down his window, and threatened her with profanity.

He then pointed a gun at her.

“The working hypothesis at this point is this is some kind of traffic issue, or road-rage incident,” Loftis said.

A number of students in the parking lot saw the incident take place. The district also had the encounter recorded on its security tapes, and law enforcement and district staff were reviewing it.

While there were no injuries and the lockdown went smoothly, Loftis acknowledged there nonetheless was an impact.

“When you’re a young person and a person points a gun at you, that is harm,” he said.
