More than a dozen pets found new homes during this weekend’s open house at the King County Pet Adoption Center in Kent.
The second annual event, which was part of a statewide celebration organized by Pawsitive Alliance, highlighted the good work that animal shelters all over Washington are doing to get pets adopted into loving homes.
“The open house was a chance for people to go ‘behind the scenes’ a little bit and see how Regional Animal Services works every day to help animals and people,” said Dr. Gene Mueller, manager of Regional Animal Services of King County (RASKC). “We’d like to thank Pawsitive Alliance for organizing this statewide celebration and raising awareness for pets in need.”
A key part of the King County celebration involved members of Girl Scout Troop 44180 from Kent. For their Silver Project, six girls in the troop organized a community event in September called “Wiggles, Wags, ‘n Whiskers.”
The event was designed to raise awareness of responsible pet ownership and animal resources available in the community. The young women also partnered with M&M’s Critter Cottage to organize a fundraiser to help pay for veterinary medical care for animals awaiting adoption at RASKC and M&M’s Critter Cottage. Troop members and leaders were on hand for the check presentation during the open house.
“The girls chose this project because they all love animals and wanted to find a way to be a voice for animals in need,” said troop leader Susan Coffman. “For ten months, they stayed focused and managed to put on a fantastic event for the community. All the parents and families of the girls are proud of their accomplishment, and we know they will continue to do great things in our community.”
More than a dozen shelters across Washington took part in this year’s Pawsitive Alliance Statewide Shelter Open House. Shelters that participated in the first celebration in 2012 saw a 25-percent increase in pet adoptions on Open House day.
