Groups for and against federal funding of Planned Parenthood are planning rallies and a march on Saturday, Feb. 11, in Kent.
Several pro-life groups have organized more than 200 rallies in as many as 45 states for Saturday at Planned Parenthood locations to call on President Trump and Congress to strip all federal funding of Planned Parenthood and reallocate those funds to health centers to help disadvantaged women without destroying human life through abortion, according to rally websites.
St. Stephen The Martyr Catholic Church, of Renton, will sponsor a rally from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at the Planned Parenthood clinic in Kent, 10056 SE 240th St. The clinic is closed on Saturday. The rally is entitled “Help End Planned Parenthood with Truth and Prayer.”
In response to that rally, supports of Planned Parenthood plan to meet at 8:30 a.m. at Town Square Plaza, Second Avenue North and West Harrison Street, in downtown Kent. The group will have a short rally with speakers before marching 1.7 miles up the James Street hill to the Planned Parenthood clinic.
The group plans to line sidewalks and a pedestrian overpass from 9:30 to 11 a.m. with pro-choice supporters to defend the clinic.
Kent Police are aware of the rallies. The department has activated its Civil Disturbance Unit to help with crowd control, according to police officials.
