Mizan Rahman has announced he is running for the Kent City Council.
Rahman, a senior capital project manager for the King County Wastewater Division, is president of the Islamic Center of Kent as well as the Meridian Orchard Neighborhood Council. He is chair of the city of Kent’s Cultural Communities Board and a member of the Police Department’s Community Policing Task Force.
“As a council member, I will focus on increasing the community participation in the city, improving public safety and addressing issues that are important to families in Kent such as affordable housing and high-quality public education,” Rahman said in a press release. “I will work with other team members to develop an effective, comprehensive plan for the city to address the fiscal cliff, housing for all income groups, job-ready training facilities, capital development projects and ensure equity and social justice in every aspect of our city government.”
Rahman is the third candidate to recently announce he is running in addition to incumbents Les Thomas, Bill Boyce and Marli Larimer. Dennis Higgins said he will not run again.
Hira Bhullar and Awale Farah also have announced. Bhullar said this week he plans to challenge Thomas while Farah will run for the seat to be vacated by Higgins.
Rahman, who has lived in Kent for 12 years, is uncertain which position he will seek. He lives on the East Hill with his wife and has two adult children who attended Kent public schools.
Bhullar and Rahman were among eight finalists chosen by the council to replace Tina Budell last year before it picked Larimer.
Candidates must file between May 13-17 with King County Elections. The primary election is Aug. 6 if there are more than two candidates in a race, with the top two vote-getters advancing to the Nov. 5 general election.
